"Portfolio Series: Osmeivy Ortega" at the Museum of Latin American Art (MoLAA)

Ortega’s works of art are inspired by the landscapes and experiences of his childhood.  The artwork presented in this exhibition – based on animal imagery - contrasts with his subtle political and social statements where the human figure remains absent. His work appears refined, though paradoxically uses rudimentary techniques and sometimes recycled materials.

Osmeivy Ortega has carried out his work along various paths of graphic experimentation. Behind his work is an environmental interest and, above all, an existential call to the purest principles of humanity, from a self-referential point of view, and through the reference of animals, plants, and nature. The scenes narrate the artist's concerns about society, humanity, and its development. He is interested in establishing links between apparent realities and truths of life, delving into her memory and family files."

Ortega often uses common materials to express the culture of his surroundings. What started in Cuba as using different media due to necessity became and adapted practice when traveling abroad as a means of incorporating the environment in his art. In Havana, where paper is often scarce and expensive, Ortega would print onto rags that had been used fr cleaning. When he spent time in Sweden and an exchange artist, he used more expensive materials to reflect a commercialization of human contact; Ortega explains he walked down the street, “no one would make eye contact,” as the Swedes preferred to isolate themselves with cell phones and other technology.
